Point-in-Time Count

An annual census of persons experiencing homelessness is conducted during the last ten days of January in Northshore region, along communities across the country, for the Point-in-Time (PIT) count. Volunteers and staff of partnering organizations of the Northlake Homeless Coalition survey persons within our region to identify those who are without permanent, stable housing and residing in shelterd and unsheltered locations.   Unsheltered locations are places not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parks, sidewalks, abandoned buildings.  Sheltered locations are emergency shelters for homless persons and transitional housing programs for persons who were unsheltered or residing in an emergency shelter prior to entering the program. The count of literally homeless persons is defined and mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for communities receiving HUD funds

The PIT Count allows us to learn from “snapshot” data about number of persons experincing homelessness and population demographics, using consistent methods for collecting this information.  It helps inform the NHC Continuum of Care plan for addressing specific needs of our communities and make progress towards reducing, preventing, and ending homelessness.
